简介:"Anglo-China" is a study of the troubled process of establishing a British colony at Hong Kong. It focuses on the reception of British rule by people in the region and on the efforts by the colonial government to build prosperity and maintain order during a time of war, scandal, and rampant crime. The early decades are a neglected period in Hong Kong's history as a colony. They demand a fresh examination, not only because these were years crowded with events and controversies, but also because they saw the working out of a lasting, if uneasy, relationship between the colonial government and Chinese population. This study explores the misunderstandings, mutual suspicions and false starts that plagued the colonial government's efforts to forge a productive relationship with a growing Chinese merchant elite. It also traces the development of the policing methods and legal structures used by the government in its attempts to deal with mass immigration, social unrest, and challenges to British authority.Using hitherto neglected sources, "Anglo-China" also investigates the often unintended effects that the establishment of British rule in Hong Kong had on the lives of ordinary people in the region. The result is a complex profile of control, resistance and collaboration, richly illustrated by hundreds of case studies and episodes.
